Big Picture Track

Who Should Attend

The “Big Picture” Track of our Innovation Camp is for administrators, heads of school, technology coordinators, R&D directors, department heads, makerspace and fablab coordinators, program directors, and anyone interested in the nuts and bolts of how a studio model works from a broader perspective. Participants will experience NuVu’s studio model with a focus on the processes and methods used to implement creative education. If you have an interest in learning how to integrate creative thinking and design education into your program or school, then our Big Picture Innovation Camp is for you!

What You Will Learn

During the 5-day camp, participants will:

  • Learn about NuVu’s studio model and our framework of innovation
  • Develop ideas for how to integrate creative education and innovative curriculum into your school, makerspace, or organization
  • Understand the digital fabrication tools, enabling technologies, and digital software used at NuVu to support the design studio and how to set up a “makerspace”
  • Develop specific studios to be implemented at your school or organization
  • Discuss the challenges and opportunities of implementing a studio-based program in various learning environments
  • Connect with other leaders interested in creative education, design, and innovation

During our Big Picture Innovation Camp, participants will have the opportunity to experience NuVu’s studio-based model and learn how coaches/students engage in collaborative problem solving. We’ll explore current movements and ideas impacting education (PBL, Maker Movement, Design Thinking, Tinkering), and you’ll learn about the new tools, materials and technologies (both analog and digital) that are changing education. We’ll dive into the design, programming, and logistics of setting up a makerspace at various sizes and budgets; and how, when, and what technologies to integrate. As a group, we’ll brainstorm ways of inculcating a culture of creativity, innovation, and invention; and explore how hands-on learning can happen across grades, ages, and gender through a culture of inclusion. During the week, participants will also gain a deeper understanding of how student projects at NuVu integrate various subjects and content areas (math, art, science, engineering, social sciences, music, history, computer science, biology) as part of a larger design goal.

Through interactive sessions, participants will have the opportunity to consult with our passionate team on how our studio methodology can be applied to:

  • Design Studios, Innovation Labs, Maker Spaces, Entrepreneurship Centers, Research & Design Centers, College-level Programs
  • K-12 Programs (STEM, STEAM, Project-based Learning, Global Leadership, Design Technology, Entrepreneurship)
  • Curricular Areas (Math, Science, Art, Biology, Robotics, History, Social Science, etc.)

Tentative Daily Focus Areas

Focus: NuVu’s Studio Model
Participants will learn about NuVu’s studio model and pedagogy through a hands-on design challenge. There will also be opportunities for discussing this pedagogy within the context of larger educational trends.

Focus: Pedagogy Development
We’ll discuss our planning process around studios and how to integrate a studio-based curriculum at various scales. There will be exercises related to studio development and ideation that build participants understanding of the studio process. Through interactive sessions, participants will have the opportunity to collaboratively reflect on the studio experience and the challenges and opportunities it creates in different learning environments. Participants will also spend time developing an actionable plan of how to integrate a project idea, studio, or program into their school or personal context.

Focus: Innovations in Schools
We’ll look at the latest innovations in schools and changes in approach, methodologies and programs of leading schools. We'll examine a few case studies from our NuVuX Network and examine the impact of these programs over time. We'll brainstorm ways of developing makerspaces or innovation labs within schools, and the tools and resources needed to support them.

Focus: Global Learning
We'll visit labs at MIT and Harvard focused on developing educational tools with a global reach. We'll also share examples and strategies of how NuVuX schools are pursuing opportunities for students to engage in global learning.

Focus: Assessment
The NuVu Team will share methods for making, including the use of specific tools and equipment as they relate to NuVu's design process. Participants will have the opportunity to collaboratively reflect on the studio experience, share their ideas and plans, and get feedback.
